The northwest coast of Australia is home to the Ningaloo reef. The largest fringing reef in the world, Ningaloo is home to an abundant variety of coral and fish species. We arrived in Exmouth, Western Australia, to recover for a few days from our long drive and to spend time exploring the underwater environment.

We splurged on a trip to snorkel with whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean. The boat took us out to where we would have six short swims with the sharks as they swam by. Our Ocean Eco Adventures crew outdid themselves by providing not one, but two whale sharks! One was young, at only 12 feet. The other a full grown adult at about 25 feet! It was incredible! The following pics are from the professional photographer that was along on our trip.

We do not have a good underwater camera, but tried our phones in water proof pouches and an Insta360 camera. We snorkeled the Ningaloo reef at Lakeside and Oyster Stacks. Our photos do not do justice to the experience in the water, but here are some to give you an idea of how wonderfully alive the water here is.

We saw four reef sharks, turtles, and dozens of species of colorful fish. The best part is the snorkeling spots were all accessible from the beach!

It was an incredible underwater experience from Exmouth south to Carnarvon, where we swam at an aptly named spot called the aquarium.

There were other sites to see above the water line. We cover those in another segment…
